Market Report: Headline Partner Moves in Australia

At Macarthur Bond we have been tracking data for partner moves in Australia for several years. Twice a year we produce our market report, which provides insights into the lateral hiring market with commentary and analysis of the key developments. The most recent report, looking back over the first half of 2024, tracked key statistics and trends including:

The total number of moves has increased to 168 in the first half of 2024, compared with 140 in the first half of 2023.

The percentage of female partner movers so far in 2024 increased from 41% in H1 2023 to 45% in H1 2024.

Whilst Sydney remains the location with the most movement, Melbourne saw the highest increase in movement from 24% (33 moves) to 31% (52 moves) of the moves nationally.

Corporate is the practice area with the most movement with 13% of moves (22 partners). Litigation was the second highest practice group at 10% (16 moves), followed by Insurance and Employment, each at 8% (14 moves).

Moves to top tier firms increased slightly, from 22 in the first six months of 2023, to 25 for the same period in 2024.
