At Macarthur Bond we have been tracking data for partner moves in Australia for several years. Twice a year we produce our market report, which provides insights into the lateral hiring market with commentary and analysis of the key developments. The most recent report, looking back over the whole of 2024, tracked key statistics and trends including:
The total number of moves has increased by 20% – from 307 in 2023 to 367 in 2024.
The percentage of female partner movers in 2024 slightly increased – from 38% in 2023 to exactly 40% in 2024.
Whilst Sydney remains the location with the most movement, Melbourne has increased its market share and accounted for 30% of the moves in 2024, compared with 24% in 2023.
Corporate was the practice area with the most movement with 14% of moves (52 partners). Disputes was the second highest practice group with 37 moves, followed by Insurance (35 moves).
The majority of moves took place in the mid-market, representing 46% of moves to mid-market firms and 47% from.
