Market Report: Headline Partner Moves in Australia

At Macarthur Bond we have been tracking data for partner moves in Australia for several years. Twice a year we produce our market report, which provides insights into the lateral hiring market with commentary and analysis of the key developments. The most recent report, looking back over the whole of 2023, tracked key statistics and trends including:

  • In 2023, partner moves in Australia were at an all-time high – 20% higher (307 moves) than in the previous year (255 moves).
  • Female partner moves have dropped back to 2019 levels – 38% of all moves. For the last two years the figure was 43%.
  • Moves to mid-market firms represented more than half the moves (56%, 171 moves). In-house moves have decreased in the last two years, going from 14% in 2022 to 6% in 2023.
  • Sydney represents almost half of the national moves in Australia, increasing significantly from 104 to 150 moves in a year.
  • As a percentage of total moves, Corporate partners went from 14% (35) in 2022 to 16% (48) in 2023. The next highest practice group by movement numbers was Projects/Energy/Infrastructure at 13%, Litigation at 10%, then Restructuring/Insolvency and Property/Real Estate at 7%.
